Knee Pain and How Chiropractors Can Help

Do you experience regular bouts of pain, swelling or discomfort in one or both of your knees? Knee pain is an all-too-common phenomenon that nearly everyone will experience at some point in their life. In fact, some studies suggest that nearly one in three doctor’s visits are attributed to it. Rather than simply masking the pain with medication, however, you should seek to treat the root cause, which is where chiropractic treatment comes into play.

The knee works as a ball and joint system protected with fluid-filled sacs known as bursas. When you run, jog, jump or even walk, these sacs absorb the physical pressure, preventing otherwise painful bone-on-bone contact. Over time, however, the bursas may begin to wear down and deteriorate, at which point pain and other unwanted symptoms will manifest themselves. And if left untreated, the symptoms will become progressively worse over time, making it difficult to perform ordinary tasks like walking.

Bursitis is a condition that’s characterized by inflammation of the bursas. While symptoms vary from person to person, most people who suffer from bursitis report sharp, shooting pain throughout the affected knee. As mentioned above, conditions such as this can directly affect one’s quality of life, making it difficult, if not impossible, to perform ordinary tasks that many of us take for granted. The key thing to remember that bursitis is that you need to allow the swelling to subside before engaging in physical activity that places pressure on the knees.

You might be surprised to learn that fractures can also lead to knee pain. Many people unknowingly develop small hairline fractures within their knee without even knowing it. It’s not until they seek medical treatment when they discover a chipped bone embedded in their tissue or muscle. This is particularly commonplace among sports athletes, many of whom develop fractures from practicing and playing sports.

The good news is a that a chiropractor can often treat many common forms of knee pain. A professional chiropractor will first perform an examination of the affected knee to determine what exactly is causing the pain, at which point he or she will recommend various treatment options.
